Summer Glow

Flowers everywhere and the heat has settled in, Summer is here. My gardens this year seem more prolific than the past several. Perennials are taking hold after being planted two years ago, we have spent time amending soils and tending to very old gardens at our historic property. Also, planting our new raised beds for vegetables that my husband created, both the plants and I love them!

This season has been hot in northern new York, but nowhere near the temps taking place it seems everywhere else in the country. Mother Nature is sending a message and she is not too happy with us! So far we seem very lucky where have settled, but we will see what is to come with Fall and Winter this year.

Until then, my dye plants are happy and abundant, so I am harvesting daily, drying them for bundle dyeing, dye vats and storage.  I have one garden filled with an assortment of sulfur, tango, chocomocha cosmos, and marigolds. Another bed has Amaranth, Hopi Sunflowers, Weld, Dyers Chamomile, Delphinium and Black Knight Scabiosa. And scattered about the yard are the wild flowers, most are wonderful for bundle dyeing.

As we approach August, this season brings special visits with friends and family, fresh produce from our garden and all the amazing farms in our area, and I have been teaching small intimate classes at my local art venues, which I truly love. Several are still to come, you can find them listed in events.  I am also dedicated to following through with creating a body artwork, which I hope to reveal at the end of the summer.  Finally but maybe one of the best things about living this far north… it stays light until almost ten in the evening this time of year! Days are long and I am taking it all in before the seasons shift again in a few months. Enjoy your summer.
